Gold or Hay?

“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is already laid, which is Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One. But if anyone builds upon the Foundation (Jesus Christ), whether it be with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or straw, the work of each one will become plainly and openly known (shown for what it is); for the day of Christ will disclose and declare it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test and critically appraise the character and the worth of the work each person has done.” (I Corinthians 3:11-13)

The foundation of our Christian walk is Jesus Christ. He laid the foundation for us to build on. The question is, what materials are we going to use? How much effort are we going to put into the work He has called us to do after we receive salvation in Jesus Christ?

Are we going to be diligent in our efforts to walk with Him or are we going to be spiritually lazy and do just enough to get by? Remember this: it will all be tried in the fire and if your work is built with wood, hay and stubble, you will have nothing to give the Lord on that day. Only the foundation will remain. On the other hand, if you diligently cultivate your relationship with Him day by day, moment by moment. If you are faithful to obey His instructions to you, then what you build on will be gold and silver and precious stones. These things won’t burn up and consume away. They will only get more brilliant.

On that day when our works are tried and tested for their worth, I want mine to be pure gold! I want my works to bring a big smile on His face. It isn’t a hard thing to do. It takes a passion for Him and a love for Him. It takes a made up mind and a fixed heart.

Jesus did it. He looked past the pain of the Cross into the joy of the victory for all mankind! We are not above our Master. We can do it too. Think about that day when we receive our rewards for the works we did for Him here on earth.

Don’t get me wrong. We receive eternal life only by FAITH in Jesus. If we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our hearts the Father has raised Him from the dead…we are saved. But it doesn’t end there! We are supposed to advance the Kingdom of God on this earth to bring souls to God. We are to reproduce. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to receiving the rewards and crowns He has laid up for me! I sure don’t want to stand there with nothing because I didn’t take the time to do what He called me to do.

Everyone has a ministry. Everyone has a purpose. It’s up to us to seek God about our purpose, about our gifts and to use them to advance the Kingdom of God by leading people to the Light of Jesus Christ! Examine your works today. Are you using gold, silver and precious stones to build on or wood, hay and stubble?

Blessings everyone…

  1. Yes I totally agree with you on this. I pray that people read this and put your wonderful words into practice. A lot of the population encounters great words of wisdom but never use them because they don’t think it is for them. It is no accident you read those words or these.

I know Jamie, it’s a challenge that many people don’t want to think about. I know I’ve been there. When I was building with wood, hay and stubble..not wanting to give up the world’s pleasures for Him. Looking back though..there is really nothing the world has to offer that compares to walking close to Him..thank you so much for your insight…Blessings in Jesus!
