The Road To Holiness

“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.”
2 Timothy 1:9

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Romans 12:1

God is a Holy God.  That is a fact that has been pretty well established.  Everything in heaven is holy; the angels are called “the holy angels.”  Everything around God has to be holy or it can’t be around God.  It’s that simple.

Second Timothy says it well, “He has saved us and called us to a holy life–not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace.”  It is a requirement by God that we be holy even as He is Holy.  The next question is “how do we get to that state of holiness?”

Holiness is simply this:  spiritual maturity.  It is the finished product of growing up in God.

  1.  It’s having the mind of Christ.  Loving what He loves and hating what He hates.  It is being in total agreement with everything He wants for your life.

  2.  It’s making a full conscious effort to obey the Word of God, in your words, in your thoughts and in your actions–just like Jesus did.

  3.  It’s making the decision every day to be more like Jesus than you did the day before.

  4.  It’s consciously developing the fruit of the Spirit in your life:  love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control.  When these fruits are fully developed, Satan can bring no accusations against you.  There is no law to condemn you.

  5.  It’s a decision to crucify your flesh every day.  Paul said “I die to my flesh daily.”  It’s making the decision that your spirit man is going to rule the day and not your flesh.  You spirit is in sync with God.  Your flesh always is at odds with Him.

  6.  It’s making the decision to ask God for and pursuing all the spiritual gifts, especially the greatest gift–LOVE.

  7.  It’s being watchful to guard the “gates” in your life.  The eye gate (what you see and watch) the ear gate (what you listen to) and the mouth gate (what you speak out).  Guard these areas carefully.

  8.  It’s always striving to get closer and closer to God day by day.  Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.

  9.  It’s being Kingdom minded.  Yes you are a citizen of the earth but your home is in heaven.  Your loyalty belongs to the Kingdom of God.  Holiness looks into eternity and can’t wait to get there.

People tend to think of holiness as a negative thing.  Of God wanting to make their lives miserable.  Holiness means to be set apart for God’s uses.  He can’t use anyone who is still in love with the world and its pleasures.  And no one can look into His face on that day without being holy.

A person who is in love with Jesus Christ, is going to travel the road to holiness with a joyful heart.  A person who is not, won’t even try. That is why Jesus said the road is narrow and hard to travel.  The road to holiness is the road to spiritual maturity in Jesus Christ and when we get to that place, then we are on the Highway of Holiness spoken of in Isaiah 35:8  And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.”

The Bible calls it the”Way of Holiness.”  Attaining holiness, is foolish in the eyes of the world–and even in some Christian circles.  That is why we have to be Kingdom-minded and look past this life and into eternity.  This mind-set will keep us focused and God will be able to use us mightily in these last days.  It starts with a decision to get on the road…

Don’t know Him?
