Number One

“Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world.  If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one’s own resources or in the stability of earthly things]–these do not come from the Father but are from the world itself.

And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever.” (I John 2:15-18)

The world offers lots of things to love and cherish such as family and friends, freedom to pursue our dreams, going to the movies and dinners, going to the school prom and picnics in the park.  These things are what great memories are made of  and cherished.  The world also offers dark pleasures of illicit sex, pornography, and drug and alcohol abuse to name a few.

What does this scripture mean “do not love or cherish the things of the world?”  This word is for believers in Jesus Christ.  Anyone who has asked Jesus into their heart, are supposed to love Him more than anything in the world.  This scripture is not talking to anyone who does not know Jesus because they are only doing what is natural to them.  But a believer is held to the higher standard of God.

A believer has repented, meaning they have turned back from going the way of the world and are instead walking towards God and their heavenly home.  A believer who loves the world and sinful pleasures of the world really needs to re-think their relationship with God.  Unfortunately, many of them are getting the “OK” from their own churches!

God must be number one in a believer’s life.  That is the bottom line.  The way of the world says you can have it both ways.  “God just wants you to be happy!”  It’s OK to go out and party, it’s OK to watch that movie, it’s OK to have sex with people other than your spouse…after all God only wants you to be happy!”  Don’t be deceived, God is not mocked–whatsoever a man sows, that is what he shall reap.”

In reality, one second in the presence of Jesus will change you forever.  The things of the world grow strangely dim in His presence.  His presence is so addicting that there is nothing the world has to offer that can compare to one second in His presence.  I know, because I’ve been on both sides of the fence and I’m here to tell anyone who will listen: IT’S MUCH BETTER OVER HERE!

Here is what the world can’t do for you: The world can’t heal your broken heart,  the world can’t give you real peace and the world won’t be there in your darkest days.

Jesus CAN heal your broken heart and He is the only One with the precious peace that passes all understanding.  He will never leave you or forsake you–even in your darkest days.  Truly, a love like this, the world has never known.

Blessings everyone…
