The Appearing

“And it occurred that as He reclined at table with them, He took bread and praised God and gave thanks and asked a blessing, and then broke it and was giving it to them when their eyes were instantly opened and they clearly recognized Him, and He vanished.  And they said to one another, were not our hearts greatly moved and burning within us on the road and as He opened and explained to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:30-32)

“Now while they were talking about this, Jesus Himself took His stand among them and said to them, Peace be to you!  But they were so startled and terrified that they thought they saw a spirit.  And He said to them, Why are you disturbed and troubled, and why do such doubts and questionings arise in your hearts?” (Luke 24:35-38)

Jesus has resurrected from the grave in the glorified body that we will receive at our resurrection.  The Bible says He is the firstborn from among the dead.  Death where is your sting?  Jesus overcame it!  Two of His followers were walking to Emmaus, when Jesus appeared and began walking along with them.  His identity was hidden from them.

It was on this journey that He opened the Scriptures’ meaning to them.  They were very much interested in His teaching and when they reached Emmaus, they begged Him to stay with them for dinner.  As He broke the bread and blessed it, He opened their eyes and they recognized Him.  How exciting that must have been for them!  Then He vanished!

I see a few nuggets of Truth here in just these two passages:

Nugget One ~ All of Jesus’ followers were understandably distraught at His death and even though He told them more than once that He would die and rise from the grave after three days, they could not believe it.  They even saw Him raise at least two people from the grave during Jesus’ ministry on Earth.  They had just left Jerusalem where they had heard about five hundred people rising from the grave at Jesus’ resurrection.  Yet they were blown away at His appearing to them.  It is hard for the human mind to wrap around the supernatural because it is outside of our natural laws.  How can a person raise from the dead and appear and just vanish?  Yet, the supernatural is all around those who believe…

Nugget Two ~ All of Jesus’ followers had intimate knowledge of Him.  They knew Him personally and dwelt with Him during His time on Earth.  They had a relationship with Him.  There was mutual love between them.  Notice the care Jesus took to appear to His friends to comfort them, teach them and instruct them?  These two guys weren’t part of  the eleven disciples; they were still back in Jerusalem.  Yet Jesus took the time to walk with them to Emmaus so He could teach them more about Him in the Scriptures.

Nugget Three ~ The glorified body that Jesus rose from the dead with, is the same one we will have.  In His glorified body, He appeared and vanished as He willed.  His body was not subject to natural laws of time and gravity.  Yet He ate with them and walked with them.  At some point we will die or if He returns in our lifetime, we will be instantly changed from mortal to immortal and we too, will have the same glorified body He does!

Nugget Four ~ As the Second Person of the Godhead (the Trinity), Jesus is eternal.  He has no beginning and He has no end.  In eternity past, His form was vastly different.  He is the Word of God.  His form was indescribably glorious.  No words can convey the beauty of His glory.  Yet He left that to forever become the Son of Man.  He will never return to His former form.  He is forever tied to humanity through this glorified body.  He truly does know how we feel and His mercy endures forever…

Everything about Jesus’ words and life are so rich in Truth.  The Word (Jesus) is the depth of the wisdom of God we are to pursue.  There is no one else like Jesus.  When He appears, EVERYTHING changes forever!  And that is the best news ever…

Don’t know Him?

Meet Jesus Here…

Blessings everyone…
